Falls Township EIT

The Falls Twp. Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to enact a 1% Earned Income Tax (EIT) on their residents.   See the Patch article, here.

Their stated intention is to use 1/2% for Falls’ purposes and 1/2% will be available to the Pennsbury School District.  BEWARE of what could happen next!  See, PA school districts must get every municipality in their district to pass an EIT prior to them being able to enact a district-wide EIT (which happens to require a referendum).  The Falls supervisors are attempting the same strategy used by Middletown Twp. in 2013, when Middletown supervisors passed a similar 1% EIT, structure as 1/2%-township + 1/2%-Neshaminy School District; which pressured Neshaminy and neighboring towns to each consider passing an EIT.  See the Courier Times article about this, here.

What could this mean?  LMT supervisors and Yardley councilpersons could reconsider enacting an EIT, after which Pennsbury would be legally capable of passing a district-wide EIT.
